Max the Mighty

Third Quarter Classroom Novel

Our class will be reading Max the Mighty at home. On Friday, we will hold reading conferences and take a quiz. Each night, students are also responsible for completing a daily reading log which requires a parent signature.

Max the Mighty by: Rodman Philbrick

Whole Class Book Study

A brilliant, emotionally charged novel about two boys. One is a slow learner, too large for his age, and the other is a tiny, disabled genius. The two pair up to create one formidable human force known as "Freak the Mighty".

1) Outside of Paper Bag

  • Front of Bag:  You must include the title, author, and picture from the story.  Do NOT include a picture that is already in the book.  (front of bag)

  • Back of Bag:  Write a summary (at least a paragraph) about the book, without telling the end. (back of bag)

    • Be sure to include the main characters, setting, conflict, and a few details in the summary.

    • You also need to write about your favorite part and why you would recommend this book in a paragraph. (back of bag)

2) Inside the bag

  • You may choose 5-6 items that represent a part of the story.

  • You should have 1 item about the main character, 1 item about the setting, 1 item from the rising action, 1 item from the climax, and 1 from the falling action or resolution.

Miracle's Boys by Jacqueline Woodson

If things hadn't changed, Charlie wouldn't have been arrested and sent to Rahway Correctional. Ty'ree would have gone to college instead of having to work full-time to support them. And Lafayette wouldn't have all of these questions in his head: Why did their parents have to die? When did Charlie turn into such a stranger? And how are the three of them going to make it through when so much seems to be set against them?
